How Generation’s Z’s Outlook on Diversity Will Change The Future Of Business

June 20, 2017

Multi-cultural, tech-intuitive, and imbued with a more open and accepting social attitude, this new generation is poised to substantially change the outlook of today’s workforce.

Every generation gets its turn being picked apart by marketing thought leaders highlighting each age-group’s strengths, weaknesses, tendencies, and their relation to history, so it’s no doubt that the time has come for Generation Z, the post-Millennial group, aged approximately 13-20 right now, to come under the  microscope.

This new generation has a completely native, high-tech upbringing, with some even inspired to call them the “Glass” generation, because of their early exposure to iPads, learning on apps geared for children. They have been interacting with powerful technology since day one, and as a result they are experts at processing a large amount of information.

Another big component to Generation Z is their ethnic diversity. For the first time in the U.S. in 2011, there were more babies born in families of minorities than whites. This generation is the most diverse cultural population the U.S. has ever had, and that statistic is going to increase with time. The population growth rates of minorities are exceeding the growth rate of the majority.

Regarding social attitudes, this generation supports LGBT rights, and knows the value of diversity, and as they enter the workplace, they’ll expect it to be no different. Businesses looking to hire top young talent are investing now in diversity programs, with some becoming advocates and supporters of different LGBT and multi-cultural organizations, and informing their employees of services they have available.

This new diversity in the workforce will bring about an increase in diversity supplier demand as well, as many corporations become more conscious of their own diversity practices when hiring.

Businesses will be urged to make diversity a goal requirement, and the landscape of the workforce demographic will continue to change. Leaders will emerge from entirely new populations and the scope of industries will have a new dynamic as a younger generation takes the helm.

It’s all just conjecture at this point, but as the new high-school/college-aged kids start entering the workforce, expect to see many more reports on their quirks and curiosities. It will no doubt make for an interesting future.
